Heroin Addiction Acts As Substitute for Prescription Drugs

The word heroin is derived from the German word “heroisch” which means powerful and heroic. When injected, heroin is considered by many to be the fastest acting drug known to man. The user will feel the drug take control instantly. The effects of heroin usually last between 4-8 hours. As an individual grows a tolerance to the drug they will need more of it to produce the same effects. Eventually if the drug is not in a person’s system they will struggle with severe physical withdrawal symptoms and need the drug just so that they can function. Heroin addiction will lead to numerous health issues including death if ignored and left untreated. For a few years it seemed as if heroin addiction was on the decline. Today heroin addiction is a problem that is once again on the rise. One belief is that as it is becoming more difficult for individuals who are addicted to opiate prescription drugs such as OxyContin they are turning to the streets to get their hands on heroin. Heroin used to be a drug that had a stereotype of only affecting homeless people or people of lower socio-economical class. Now heroin addiction can be found no matter where you turn. Heroin can be found in the offices of white collared professionals as well as private schools on both the high school and college level. Heroin is often abused by snorting it but when the abuser starts to look for higher highs they often graduate into abusing the drug intravenously which is very dangerous and opens the door to more health issues. Often heroin abuse starts as a cheaper alternative to a prescription drug addiction. A bag of heroin can be purchased for less than five dollars. If you or someone you know has a life that is slowly or quickly being destroyed by heroin addiction treatment can help.
