At the ripe age of 18, Demi Lovato Disney actress and singer, has completed drug treatment and recognizes that she was self-medicating emotional pain with drugs and alcohol. She checked into drug rehab in 2011 to address her eating disorder, addiction and mood issues. She is like most people that suffer from addiction who have underlying mood issues. Self-medicating emotional pain through the use of drugs and alcohol only offers temporary relief and compounds the initial issues. Shame and guilt over self-destructive behaviors negatively impact already painful feelings that were originally there. The cycle of addiction requires that we abuse ourselves over past issues to keep up our present addictive patterns. Demi Lovato is now 19 and extremely vocal about her sobriety. In the new issue of Seventeen Magazine Lovato states, “I think it is way cooler to be above the influence than under the influence.” Words of wisdom from one of our celebrity young adults.
