The length of stay in an addiction treatment program varies greatly. Some programs last only a few days up to a week. Other long-term programs can last months. How long someone stays in rehab is dependent upon many factors and differs from patient to patient. Common factors for determining a treatment plan are:
- History of use
- Usage amount
- Substance(s) used
- Medical history
- Prior treatment history
Drug addiction treatment is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Quality rehab centers base the patient’s length of stay on their specific diagnosis. A treatment plan should be outlined matching the individual’s needs. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a residential or outpatient program lasting less than 90 days has limited effectiveness. Treatment lasting significantly longer is recommended for maintaining positive outcomes. However, this statement leaves some room for interpretation. Comprehensive treatment programs lasting longer than 90 days may include intensive outpatient, counseling, 12 step groups, and other supportive fellowships.
Stages of Rehab
While not every patient needs all levels of care, there is a common progression through addiction treatment. Most patients require some form of detox, inpatient treatment, and an aftercare plan for post-treatment success.
Medical Detox
Ridding the body of substances usually takes seven to ten days. As stated above, the length of detox varies based on substances used, medical history, the presence of co-occurring disorders, and other factors. Medications assisting patients through withdrawal can alleviate many of the unpleasant symptoms one may encounter. Keeping patients comfortable during detox is important for treatment success. Studies have shown 40-60 percent of patients receiving treatment for drug addiction will relapse. Ensuring a comfortable detox provided by a qualified medical team can improve success rates.
Inpatient Rehab & Residential Treatment
Inpatient and/or residential rehab is usually the next step after detox. Depending on the treatment center, this phase of treatment can last anywhere from seven to 90 days. During this stage of treatment, individual and group counseling sessions continue, and patients are able to focus more clearly on underlying issues after detox.
Outpatient Treatment
Outpatient treatment is a lower level of care where the patient visits a treatment facility three to five days a week. Outpatient care can include medication as well as individual and group therapy sessions. Patients attending outpatient care usually attend sessions for three to six months.
Aftercare
Aftercare is an integral part of any treatment stay. Planning for what happens post-treatment should be given equal thought to detox or residential treatment. Patients who adhere to a comprehensive aftercare plan have higher success rates than those who do not.
How Long is Treatment at Stepping Stone?
Treatment at Stepping Stone Center for Recovery typically lasts 10-15 days. Our goal is to provide a comfortable, medical detox under 24-hour supervision. Our board-certified medical team outline a treatment plan that fits your individual detox needs.
