Heroin Vaccine Could End Heroin Addiction A heroin vaccine does not seem possible; however, the Mexican government has just patented a medication that claims to be such. Tested on rats, scientists believe that in five years this vaccine will be ready for humans. The vaccine blocks heroin from entering the nervous system and attaching to the opioid receptors in the brain. The rush effect is diminished and the person will not be able to achieve the effect heroin offers, therefore making it less appealing. In the experiment the rats craved less heroin as a result of taking this vaccine and were not chasing the rush effect by looking for continual use. This study is expanding by looking into vaccines for both methamphetamines and cocaine. What a great concept. Making vaccines for people to take before substance abuse and addiction develops. Preventing someone from initially experiencing the euphoric impact of drugs would make continued use less appealing. If this is something that can be developed for humans and work, relapse prevention will take on a whole new meaning.
