Researchers from the University of NSW, Australia, believe that the same inhalant used for multiple sclerosis may be helpful for those who are attempting to terminate their marijuana dependence. Sativex, the inhalant medication, contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), the two main ingredients found in marijuana. Long term marijuana abuse has withdrawal symptoms that are psychological in nature such as: irritability, depression, anger, sleeping problems and restlessness. There is also a correlation between marijuana abuse and some mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and schizophrenia. Marijuana use can also increase the risk of development of these types of mental illnesses, especially if there is a family history of such. The reliability of giving a drug substitute that actually is the drug itself does not seem helpful for addiction treatment in a drug rehab facility. Instead of smoking marijuana, the researchers in Australia propose that you would use an inhaler to ingest the drug to cut back on smoking. Addicts will most likely abuse the inhaler while rationalizing that they are using it to cut down on their use and intake.
