Finding Your Way Through Recovery

The mid-90’s brought “Friends,” one of the most popular television shows with an infectiously happy theme song. People tuned in to see the antics of Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler and Ross. The group’s dynamic played on screen made it seem that they were having fun. However, for funny man Matthew Perry, who played Chandler on the show, this time in his life was far from the lighthearted comedy we saw on television. He was sick man struggling with the disease of addiction. Low Point Perry’s fame and success from the show was overshadowed by his addiction to alcohol and opiates. Although he tried to hide it, those around him knew there was something wrong. His struggle with addiction was broadcast on every television screen and covered in every entertainment magazine. Perry said that having his personal life in the media was a positive thing because many people and fans kept him accountable for his drinking and drug habit.

Turning His Life Around

Perry is now sober and getting his career back on track. However, his life doesn’t just revolve around his acting. He has made it a point to help others struggling with the same disease. He converted his home in Malibu into Perry’s House, a sober living home for men transitioning out of drug and alcohol rehab and into the real world. He has also received the Champion of Recovery award from Gil Kerlikowske, the director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Matthew Perry has turned his life around and has given back to those in need. It’s amazing what someone can accomplish with the right drug rehab program and a good group of friends.
