Fear is a common reason why people resist change and it can stop you from taking any action. As a byproduct, you can experience anxiety, self-doubt and guilt. While some anxiety can be useful to help motivate us to change, it can severely limit us.

Anxiety stops us taking action in our lives and makes us resist change by stirring up fears of what is not known. Certainty is more comfortable than uncertainty. The anxiety underlying our fear of change leads to other, more specific fears that support a resistance to change.

Some ways to overcome our fear of change:

  • Acknowledge that it exists. This helps you gain control over the situation.
  • Define your fear and anxiety by writing it out. Ask yourself when it began, what was the situation, what triggers are you aware of, and how does it manifest itself?
  • Visualize how you want the situation to turn out and focus on the positive outcome, not the negative.
  • Change the way you perceive fear. If you accept it and embrace what you have identified as fear, it can become an opportunity for growth.

Recap:57th Florida State Convention
Amy Gilland
Amy Gilland
Alumni Coordinator

The alumni department is bridging the gap from the safe environment of inpatient treatment to living life after rehab. As part of that, we are integrating patients in the higher levels of care into 12-step programs and fellowship.

In July, patients attended one day of the 57th A.A. Florida State Convention held in Jacksonville. This experience was rewarding for staff as well as patients to see recovery and fellowship firsthand. Hearing the guest speakers share openly and honestly about their struggles and strengths was amazing. The patients who attended came to the realization that recovery is a way of life, not simply a meeting a day. Patients were able to experience the wholeness and unity of the fellowship. They got to experience the broader view of how big their network can grow, and how much support is available. There were familiar faces from local sober houses, A.A. clubhouses and alumni of both Stepping Stone and Lakeview. I was happy and proud to see that the majority of our alumni attended and actively participated in volunteer work.
